Photo Highlights of Portugal

One of My Favorite Places – Lisbon
Five years ago, I was lucky to have been able to study abroad in Spain through my college James Madison University. As I have mentioned in my bio and other travel documents about myself, my study abroad trip is where the travel bug bit me. I wanted this month to be a blog tour about my trip to Spain, but since I went away to Maine and then have another trip to Sicily in almost a week, I will have to wait for another time to write about my amazing study abroad trip. In the meantime, Portugal will do!
During the summer I was studying in Spain, we had a free weekend to choose between traveling to Barcelona, Southern Spain, the Basque region or Lisbon, Portugal. Since I had never been to Portugal before, I decided to go to Lisbon during my free weekend because not only was it another country off of my bucket list, I heard it was absolutely beautiful. Let me tell you, it sure was!
I loved Portugal and think the capital Lisbon is definitely an underrated city in Europe! The ride from where I was living in Salamanca, Spain to Lisbon was six hours long, but totally worth it. During the road trip, I got to see beautiful Portuguese villages alongside mountains and European farmland. When we finally arrived at our hotel, welcoming locals greeted us. We knew right when we got there that we were in for a grand adventure!
Here are some highlights from my trip to Lisbon, Portugal:
Experiencing a page torn from a Portuguese fairytale at Pena Palace in Sintra.
Sunbathing on one of Lisbon’s coastline beaches including: Estoril-Cascais, Serra de Sintra, Costa da Caparica or Serra da Arrábida.
Strolling around the colorful beach village of Cascais.
Enjoying seaside views while savoring a delicious Portuguese seafood meal.
Taking a tram ride or walking around Lisbon’s Bairro Alto district. Grabbing dinner at one of the city’s top restaurants and dancing the night away at a nightclub was unforgettable.
Checking out Lisbon’s live street entertainment.
Catching a stunning sunset on Lisbon’s coast.
Going back in time and getting lost in the Belém Tower. This historical site offers the perfect views to take great photographs!
Exploring the Moorish, Gothic and Renaissance exhibits in Jerónimos Monastery.
Pretending I was sitting near the iconic Golden Gate Bridge at a cute Portuguese café on Lisbon’s Rio Tejo Tagus River.
I hope you all enjoyed reading about my highlights from Portugal. I was so happy I chose to visit this beautiful country as it became one my favorite places in the world. If you are traveling to Western Europe, I definitely suggest making your way over to the Lisbon area and visiting all of the places I mentioned above.
