The beloved 178-year old tour operator collapsed on Sunday night and immediately entered into liquidation leaving thousands of travelers stranded worldwide.
People are stranded in Spain, Turkey, Tunisia, and Greece. Tourism in Crete, Greece has been majorly impacted where TC had large numbers of hotel contracts. A wedding which was planned over one year ago in Rhodes, Greece clearly will not go on as planned as Thomas Cook never deposited with the hotel.
Not only as a travel advisor but also has a traveler this news can be rather unsettling and is certainly heartbreaking. For my colleagues who only use suppliers to book trips, there is something to be said about that and this is a lesson to take seriously!
I don’t want to hear this is a fluke and it cannot happen again. It can and perhaps it will. I cannot imagine those of you who booked your clients using a trusted supplier and then this. I am happy I am not one of them.
To explain a little for consumers who are unfamiliar with what a supplier is. Most agents will take your entire trip and send it off to a supplier that can package everything including flights, transfers, hotel accommodations, tours, experiences, etc. You pay the agent and they immediately pay the supplier.
Did you take travel protection? Hopefully so but still, now what?
What Happened After Thomas Cook Collapsed?
Your flight departs and lands in Crete for example. Your package included transfers but there is no driver waiting with your name on a sign. You call the local number used in case of an emergency. The transfer company apologizes and says they are sorry, but the transfer was never paid for and has been canceled. You paid the agent; the agent paid the supplier, but the supplier never paid for the services you contracted out for.
You finally make it to your hotel only to find out even more bad news. Your hotel has not been paid for and there is no availability. Your next call is to your agent to ask what is going on and you are given the news like today’s headlines. Your stress-free vacation is now nothing but and you soon find out no tours and no flights back home. That is exactly what is happening worldwide today.

Thomas Cook UK Plc and associated UK entities have entered Compulsory Liquidation and are now under the control of the Official Receiver. The UK business has ceased trading with immediate effect and all future flights and holidays are canceled.
