The Perfect Day Trip to the City of Brotherly Love
Happy Tuesday! This past weekend was absolutely beautiful, so my friends and I decided to do a girls day and explore Philadelphia. Known as the “City of Brotherly Love”, Philly is only a two-hour drive from where I live in North Jersey and features Federal-style architecture, cobblestone streets, a waterfront, beautiful parks, great food and history!
There is so much to do and see in the city of Philadelphia that I created the perfect guide for you to follow if you decide to visit or do a day trip.
Stroll through Rittenhouse Square:
The charming area of Rittenhouse Square features cute houses and buildings, numerous coffee shops and eateries as well as a beautiful park to stroll around in. Whether you decide to head to Rittenhouse Square in the morning or at night, it is always beautiful. Enjoy the colorful flowers during the day and then get to see the dreamy Christmas lights later in the evening.
Admire Street Art:
Throughout the heart of Philadelphia, you could find some stunning mural work by the city’s most talented artists. One of the art works we discovered on South Juniper Street was The Atlas of Tomorrow: A Device for Philosophical Reflection. Artist Candy Chang created this beautiful and interactive installation that translates the I Ching into a tool to help the public examine their lives in the current moment.
Philadelphia Magic Gardens:
Known as the largest work of art created by talented mosaic artist Isaiah Zagar, the Philadelphia Magic Gardens span three city lots and include indoor art galleries and an outdoor maze. It is the perfect place to take incredible photos! The mosaics are made up of everything from kitchen and floor tiles to bike wheels as well as Latin American art to china plates. You definitely cannot go to Philly without seeing this magical place!
When it comes to food, there are always a plethora of options to choose from when you travel to a new city. One Philly staple that was highly recommended to me was Reading Terming – a farmer’s market and foodie haven. This incredible food market offers Pennsylvania grown produce, locally-sourced meats, fresh seafood, cheeses, baked goods and confections. At Reading Terminal, you can find any foodie item from the famous Philly cheesesteaks to sweet treats.
Eating in Center City:
Located in the Center City of Philly are a bunch of great restaurants, cute outdoor cafés, awesome gelato shops and so much more! My friends and I enjoyed lunch in the sun at a wine bar and pizzeria called Zavino. Some other great places to eat delicious meals in Philadelphia are El Vez, Sampan, Vetri Cucina and Fogo de Chão. After savoring a great lunch, grab some of the best gelato at Capogiro Gelato Artisans. During my time in Philly, I personally enjoyed an amazing chocolate hazelnut treat (my fav)!
Get to See American History:
As you walk east towards the Delaware River, you will run into some amazing historical areas and monuments. Philadelphia’s Historic District is where you could stroll through the quaint area of Elfreth’s Alley and then get to see the iconic Independence Hall and Liberty Bell! In addition, there are so many other great historical buildings in the area that you could tour around and go back in time.
Enjoy the Evening on the Delaware:
Before we ended our time in Philly, we enjoyed the rest of the day on the Delaware River. Morgan’s Pier is considered to be Philadelphia’s backyard during the spring, summer and fall months. This pier is a waterfront biergarten where people from all over the city could enjoy a refreshing beverage with a bite to eat. While we were enjoying the evening at Morgan’s Pier, we enjoyed watching boats sail along the water, admired the views of the iconic Ben Franklin Bridge that goes from Philadelphia to Camden, NJ and to top it off, the friendly restaurant workers even gave us blankets to keep warm as the temperature began to drop.
